How Tilt Hydrometer Upgraded From a DIY Box to Retail-Ready Packaging

Tilt Hydrometer is a free-floating digital hydrometer and thermometer for home brewing that connects over Bluetooth to track a brew's specific gravity and temperature in real time, letting brewers monitor fermentation without opening the fermenter. Moving from a homemade box to a retail product meant the packaging needed to catch up to the device.

Challenges

Tilt had a strong product in a homemade box, and moving to retail meant fixing the presentation without blowing the budget. The team came to PakFactory with three things to solve.

  • A DIY box that undersold the product.
The device's presentation was hindered by the homemade corrugated box and its taped-on paper sleeve.
  • A precise device that needed a secure fit.
The free-floating hydrometer needed an insert shaped to hold it correctly.
  • A tight budget for the run.
The packaging solution had to stay cost-effective.

I received valuable advice that was both design and cost-conscious, helping us match where we were with our product.

Solutions

To replace the homemade box, PakFactory recommended a printed folding-carton tray and sleeve in 24 PT stock, printed in full-color CMYK with a gloss finish, giving the device the clean, retail-ready presentation the taped-together box never had.

Because the device is a delicate instrument, the packaging required an exacting approach. PakFactory engineered a custom-fitted tray that cradles the unit securely in place, preventing movement during transit. This precision design not only ensures protection but also creates a premium "reveal" effect so that the device is immediately presented in its best light the moment the sleeve is slid off, transforming the simple unboxing into a polished, professional brand experience.

Because the run had to fit a tight budget, PakFactory tuned the box dimensions to keep it cost-effective without losing the brief, and offered design- and cost-conscious advice along the way. Tilt could preview the packaging in 3D before committing to a quote, then signed off on a prototype before the full run.

Result

The relaunch gave Tilt a retail-ready box that reflects the quality of the product inside, and sales doubled after the new packaging launched. Tilt has reordered the same tray-and-sleeve system for years since, refining it as the product line has grown.
