How PakFactory Brought Woah Dough's Award-Winning Packaging Design to Life

Co-founded in Ontario by Marilyn Campbell and Bill Sutherland, Woah Dough is a Canadian bakery brand that earns its name with every bite. What launched as a gluten-free cookie dough shop has grown into a 7-SKU retail lineup carried across Canadian freezer aisles and multiple independent retailers, with the same packaging partner backing it from the first reorder forward.

Challenges

Frozen food brands rise and fall on whether the packaging does the work the product cannot. Locked behind glass and ice, the product cannot speak for itself at the moment of decision, leaving the packaging to carry the brand entirely. For Woah Dough, that responsibility showed up at every stage, from the design table to the freezer aisle.

  • Bringing the exclamation mark to life on every box.
The Woah Dough brand is built around the surprise of a defied expectation, captured in one visual signature, the exclamation point. Translating that brand mark from a design file into physical packaging that holds its full impact is its own challenge, because the default print method is to flush print for faster and easier scaling, and a flat exclamation mark on the box does not earn its place as the brand's anchor.
  • Packaging that survives months in the freezer without losing the design.
Cookie dough lives in the freezer for months at a time, and it is one of the most demanding environments any packaging ever lives in. Paperboard can warp where condensation hits at the freezer door, inks can lose vibrancy under fluorescent freezer lighting, lamination can peel where temperature swings concentrate, and structural integrity can quietly weaken until a box buckles on the shelf. For a brand with packaging built around precision design details, any of those failure modes would have undone the design itself.
  • Finding a packaging partner who could scale with the brand from launch forward.
Marilyn was launching her first food brand. She needed a partner that could meet all three requirements: competitive pricing that worked for her brand as a start up, a local partner she could reach in her own business hours, and a packaging operation that could grow with the brand as it expanded into new flavors and new retail accounts.

The bold colors and the raised exclamation mark made our packaging stand out so much that we had a broker fall in love with it online before they even tried our cookies. PakFactory has been wonderful to work with from the start, with fast turnaround on every reorder.

Solutions

To give the exclamation mark the physical presence the design needed, we recommended an embossed gloss print treatment, lifting the mark off the sleeve surface so it catches light and shadow on the freezer aisle in a way a flush print never could. That is the kind of practical recommendation an experienced packaging partner makes when their job is to elevate the design, not just to produce it.

The packaging sleeve itself was engineered on a freezer-grade paperboard chosen specifically for structural integrity through repeated temperature swings. The print process was calibrated to hold color vibrancy under freezer-aisle lighting, the finishes were specified to resist condensation and freeze-thaw cycles over months in cold storage. The sleeve and tray set on the freezer shelf today reads the same as the one that launched the brand, because the material and print engineering were built to defend that consistency from the start.

With both teams based in Ontario, Canada, Marilyn could work directly with PakFactory day to day, while our global manufacturing network handled production at scale. Marilyn could brief and approve over email, with quick turnarounds on every reorder. Pricing was structured to support the brand through every stage of its growth, with unit economics that held steady as the SKU count scaled up. New flavor and product launches moved through the same workflow. Over five years, PakFactory supported Woah Dough from one launch format to multiple SKUs, scaling from a food grade blister tray for cookie dough to freezer-safe vinyl sticker labels for frozen pies, tarts, muffins, and more. Woah Dough's packaging operation scaled in step with the brand's lineup, without ever losing continuity along the way.

Result

What started as a simple cookie dough launch has grown into a multi-SKU retail lineup that now spans cookies, muffins, tarts, and pies, carried across multiple independent retailers, with annual sales now running at roughly twice the launch-year baseline.

Along the way, the packaging earned recognition across the design awards circuit, with ADCC Gold, a D&AD shortlist, an ADC Bronze Cube, Marketing Awards Gold, and an Applied Arts win. That recognition is now doing what great packaging does beyond the shelf, opening doors for the brand: a Costco-focused broker recently reached out after discovering the packaging itself, proof that the Woah moment the brand was built around now lands with retail buyers as readily as with the customers reaching for the freezer door. At PakFactory, we believe packaging built to hold up under real conditions is what lets a brand keep growing without ever having to compromise on how it shows up.
