How Dark Horse Coffee Packaged a Subscription Unboxing

Dark Horse Coffee Roasters is a California coffee roaster run by the Charlson family, with cafes across San Diego plus outposts in Kauai and Truckee, and a subscription club that ships house-roasted beans to members. Growing that subscription meant the delivered box had to make the unboxing feel worth the membership.

Challenges

For a coffee subscription, the box that lands on a doorstep is the whole experience, and it has to feel special without blowing the budget. Dark Horse Coffee came to PakFactory with three things to solve.

  • A subscription riding on the unboxing.
The delivered box had to feel striking enough to keep members excited.
  • Two boxes on one budget.
The brand needed both a retail box and a shipping box, done cost-effectively.
  • No in-house packaging expertise.
They needed a partner to guide the project from concept to completion.

Customers have been loving the new look, and we are already working on our 4th project with PakFactory.

Solutions

The star of the unboxing is the retail box, a tuck-end snap-lock folding carton finished with matte lamination, gold foil stamping on the logo and text, and spot UV on the label border and fine details. Printed on offset for the sharpest reproduction, it gives every delivery the luxurious moment a subscription lives on.

The shipping box balances that premium piece on the cost side. Built as a corrugated tab-lock mailer with flood full-color digital print, it looks the part while digital printing keeps production and shipping costs down, so the two-piece system stays affordable to send week after week.

Because Dark Horse had no in-house packaging team, PakFactory's paperboard and corrugated service ran the project like an agency, laying out options and guiding the brand's own artwork from concept to completion, so the Charlsons could make confident calls without learning packaging from scratch.

Dark Horse Coffee came away with a two-part system that makes the unboxing feel premium while keeping the economics of a weekly subscription in check. Customers loved the new look, and the brand has kept coming back for more projects with PakFactory.
